Baking a difference

There are lots of ways you can make an impact on kids’ cancer research. But did you know that raising money can actually be a piece of cake? Get your mixing bowls at the ready and bake a difference for childhood cancer research!

Schools, workplaces and groups of friends across the country have been busy watching their ovens closely and perfecting their icing skills as part of Cupcakes 4 a Cure. This fun and delicious initiative has been taken up by keen bakers across Australia, who have sold cakes at morning teas and as afternoon snacks to raise funds for bold scientific research. This money goes onto help researchers discover kinder, more effective treatments for childhood cancer.

Mixing cakes with fundraising turned out to be a recipe for success at Oneschool Global in Orange, NSW. The student leadership team at the school earned lots of brownie points by spearheading an amazing day of cake, with pupils showing off their baking skills and eating lots of yummy treats.

The students took part in competitions to see who could bake their way to the top. This included submitting their showstopping cakes for judging followed by an auction, as well as trying their hand at a decorating challenge.  

“The cake competition went very well!” A student leadership team member said. “We received a number of entries and we auctioned them all off to raise a total of $1,177. We also held a cupcake decorating competition in class groups.”

The school created a Raisley community fundraising page to encourage donations and they shared this as much as possible to encourage donations and used it to spread the word on why the school were taking part in the fundraiser.

Their fundraising page stated “as a school, we believe that cancer can be combatted through scientific knowledge. We want to support this worthy cause and make a difference to kids with cancer.”

The Kids’ Cancer Project team gave encouragement to the school throughout their bake sale, leaving the students raring to go and keen to do more to help kids with cancer. 

“We hope we will get more chances to support The Kids’ Cancer Project in the future!” The team said.
